Gravity is a force. We feel weight on earth because gravity is pulling us down, while the floor or ground stops us from falling. We are pressed against it.
Modern physics describes gravitation using the general theory of relativity, in which it is a consequence of the curvature of spacetime governing the motion of inertial objects. The simpler law of universal gravitation provides an accurate approximation for most physical situations.
There is a constant interplay between gravity and movement. We went to Hammarbybacken to explore this. We thougt that the slope for slalom would be a good place to feel gravity. The score was to move downhill as a group in contact.
The basis of rythmic movement lies in the alternation of contraction and release of muscles. As we contract one set of muscles, we release another in order for the bone to move. This can be done with more or less effort.
As we mounted the hill we started by just standing, following a guided/talk-through introduction whilst clouds were passing us by. We concentrated our senses on the head, tilted it slowly and felt the point where gravity got hold of it and where it tipped over. We explored the fine line between balancing the head on the spine and letting gravity pull it down. We continued through the body, finding how gravity worked. Finnished of with the joy of jumping, leaving earth, and inevitably being pulled back.
An other spot was choosen and we started to move downhill. An easy task. We moved very quickly. Until we found a way to slow down. A lot of muscles were needed. Gravity is a force.
We stayed close to the ground. Using each others bodies to slow us down. Somtimes daring to get up on them, feeling air, loosing ground. Flying – the steep slope made the ground disappear. The city below us.
If everybody lost control at once it would have been the end. We didn't, but when the dark clouds rolled in over us we ended the exploration. Slowly it started to rain. We sat down with hot tea and a conversation. We climbed down the hill.
